Research 2009 -2011 & How can we help..!
Diabetes in children usually is a surprise for parents and they don’t know how & why it happened. This is a very serious and dangerous illness if not controlled. There is no cure for this so far. Control is the only way to avoid possible future complications related to diabetes.
Keeping all above factors a side, this is also a fact that treatment of this illness like many other serious illnesses is not cheap. It is very expensive.
According to our own practical research (2009 to 2011, 185 actual case studies in Ontario) an average cost to treat and control this illness at minimum level is estimated (In Canada):
Cost includes Insulin, syringes, testing supplies only. (Special food, personal care, doctor/hospital visits , periodic test/blood work, emergency and complicated related treatments and other expenses not included)
Insulin injection/syringe based regular treatment.
Ages 0 to 8 Years =
$ 375 per month
Ages 8 to 12 Years =
$ 550 per month
Ages 13 to 18 Years =
$ 675 per month
Insulin Pump based treatment.
Ages 8 to 12 Years =
$ 650 per month
Ages 13 to 18 Years =
$ 855 per month
Error ratio +/- 3% based on case to case way of treatment.
Many provinces in Canada directly or indirectly cover major portion of this medical treatment depending upon involved
patients control over this illness as per given guidance and standards. These standards are monitored through specialist doctors, educators, hospitals and if not up to the standards, cost is not covered and often denied.
On an average federal or Provincial Governments in Canada cover 60% of cost of medical treatment directly, 15 % is covered by charity foundations like JDRF and Canadian Diabetes Association.
According to our research still 20% of families in Canada involved in this situation do not qualify for any coverage or cost due to reasons included but not limited to Legal Immigrant Status in Canada, lack of awareness how to get it or apply, failure to meet standards of control, personal financial difficulties, language barrier, education and more...
According to our study and research medical treatment alone plays only 50% part to control this illness, there are still other areas to play a major role to control this illness including awareness about the disease, counseling for better quality of life, social and physical activities related programs and some other related activities.
